Provision was made for these imports in the contract.

OPIUM MONOPOLY CONTRACT.
The practice of granting an opium monopoly has become
almost traditional in the colony of Macao; the principles of
the monopoly were laid down in 1846 at the very beginning of
the new régime of colon ial administration
